The Don Sharpe Memorial Trophy was the annual club competition prize awarded to the best kit presented during the year at the club nights. The trophy was created in memory of Don who ensured the survival of the club during some difficult years. Sadly Don did not live to see the full results of his efforts. However, every year we were delighted to welcome back Don's daughter Linda and her husband John, together with their daughter Rachel, to see the legacy of Don's work and to help with judging and presentation of the trophy. In 2016 we decided to put the competition on hold due to a declining interest in entering models.
In case you're wondering, it was a very low-key competition. No fancy rules of entry, classes or requirements. Just bring along one or more models you have built and brought to a club night in the preceding 12 months and put it / them on the table. (So the 2012 winner is for 2011 built models). You can enter as many as you have made in the year, if you want. Judging is by all attendees at the club who are there on the night. Members and guests vote for what they believe to be the best three models on the table (ranked in priority order), using whatever judging criteria they choose. People can even vote for their own models.
It's a long way removed from formality, but our aim is to encourage people to build models for the fun and enjoyment of doing so, which is why we only had this one competition and our even more relaxed six month challenge. It may not be serious, but there's some high quality models on display as you can see.
In case you are interested, this is the roll of honour: 2003 - Dave Turner 2004 - Chris McKee 2005 - Dave Turner 2006 - Brian Boot 2007 - Brian Boot 2008 - Dave Turner 2009 - Chris McKee 2010 - Tony Horton 2011 - Chris McKee 2012 - Dave Turner 2013 - Tony Horton 2014 - Chris McKee 2015 - Tim Earley 2016 - Chris McKee
This is the Don Sharpe Memorial Trophy. The winner gets to keep the trophy for the year and their name is added to the list of previous winners.
Don Sharpe Memorial Trophy
Okay, let's be honest, you wouldn't want to meet these four on a dark night unless you were holding the modelling knife and the bottle of superglue. A group photo of the current and previous holders of the trophy, from left to right: Chris McKee, Dave Turner, Brian Boot and Tony Horton. However, 2015 requires a new face to be added!
