Brian Boot - I have been modelling for over 60 years now and I am still learning! I model anything that takes my fancy, planes, trains, boats, helicopters, cars etc., etc. I seem to be unique in one way with my modelling - it is the overwhelming desire to make them come to life in one way or another. So I have learned lots about miniature motors, lighting systems and gearing combinations. My other interest that helps my modelling skills is the art of making my own decals. Having had a great interest in graphics and photography it led me into the vast possibilities that home made decals presents and I find it is only limited by imagination.(I have produced an introduction to making and printing your own decals which can be found here Notes on Decal Making which I hope you find useful).

I mainly produce 1/32nd scale aircraft and aviation has been my main interest since serving in the R.A.F. in the 1950's. At present though, I am building Donald Campbell's 'Bluebird' World Record Breaking car in 1/20th scale. It is a mainly scratch-built model with a cut-away detailed Proteus turboprop engine with many working features. I'm also building a 1/72nd scale Bristol Brabazon with a nearly 3 foot wingspan! It will have 4 engine pods, each containing gearing to produce counter-rotating propellers powered by miniature-geared 3 volt motors.

I belong to three clubs at present, The Association of London Modellers, the IPMS Farnborough and last but not least, the West Middlesex Scale Model Club. I enjoy greatly the club meetings and learning new or improved ways of using the many skills needed to become a good modeller. I have certainly improved my modelling efforts in recent years and recommend any model maker, new or old, to join a club for the many benefits they provide.
Bentley
Supercharged Bentley - Airifx 1/8th scale.

The plastic wire wheels were replaced with more-to-scale wire ones, a process that took many hours but the results were well worth the effort. The instrument panel and all lights work using miniature light bulbs and a geared motor, installed in the engine, drives the prop shaft to differential gears that in turn drive the wheels. Extra wiring and plumbing were added to the engine bay and the decals were home made.

Beaufighter
Bristol Beaufighter - Revell 1/32nd scale kit - detailed and conversion.

The model was extensively detailed and converted from a Mk.1 to a TORBEAU. Both engines were motorised and all navigation, landing lights and the instrument panel have miniature bulbs installed. The model was set into a diorama showing airframe and maintenance crew preparing the aircraft for action. The figures were Airfix Multipurpose figures adapted to suit. The base incorporates switches and batteries and measures 2 feet by 2 feet.

The kit was converted to a GR.3 with the addition of the LRTMS nose and tail (RWR) modifications. The intake fan was activated with the addition of a miniature electric motor. All light systems were made workable using tiny bulbs. The kit's Pegasus engine was super-detailed and fuel tanks and other auxiliary items were added into the engine bay. Fuselage panels were made removable.

Messerschmitt Me 110C - Dragon 1/32nd scale kit, working propellor (motorised) and lights.

The actual aircraft depicted here was in service with the "Horst Wessel" Staffel ZG26 in Palermo, Scicily in 1940. There was a large number of parts to this kit including two fully detailed engines and a very busy cockpit with everything but the kitchen sink included. Two miniature electric motors turn the propellors. Also the navigation and landing lights are illuminated with "grain of wheat" bulbs. Many markings were produced on the computer, courtesy of Adobe Photoshop. Eduard etch was used to represent seat belts and many internal details in the cockpit and radio section. Xtracrylic paints were used for the camouflage scheme.

Hunter T.7
Hawher Hunter T.7 - Revell 1/32 scale kit, converted from single seater.

Paul Fisher's excellent conversion set was used in this model build. The resin parts fitted perfectly to the kit's fuselage parts and a very satisfactory model was produced. Most of the decals used were home made and the paint finish was mainly cans of red, blue and white Halfords car sprays. A Royal Aircraft Establishment scheme was chosen for its colourful and eye catching livery. I posed the canopy open to show the very good detailed cockpit, which was enhanced with etch parts for seat belts and control panels.

F-109X Voodoo Crusader
Vought-Douglas F-109X Voodoo Crusader. 1/48th Scale.

Chance-Vought took a chance with McDonnell-Douglas by combining to produce the unique Vought-Douglas F-109X Voodoo Crusader. The merging of two leading-edge aircraft resulted in an example of an exceptional and excellent land / ship-borne fighter-bomber. The pilot's view was superb, especially with callier landings. Performance-wise, it was powered by two General-Eccentric Cor-Blimey atomic engines of 50,000lbs thrust each! The aircraft went supersonic before leaving the runway or flightdeck which gave the ground crews strange feelings that the aircraft was coming beore it had gone. Carrying two "Big Boy" heat seeking missiles, a hydrogen bomb and four "Boy-oh-Boy" 100mm cannons. This aircraft could start and finish a war al on its own and in one mission. One and a half aircraft were built before all major countries said they wouldn't go to war whilst this plane was around because it was unfair competition as the aircraft was very , very naughty and would make war no fun anymore.

This model is made up from two separate and different kits. The front half is an 1:48 ESCI kit of the Chance-Vought Crusader. The rear half is a Lindberg 1:48 kit of the McDonnell-Douglas Voodoo. With lots of putty and patience I managed to combine the two fuselages into one smooth shape with no sign of the joint.

F.8 Prone Meteor
Glostor F.8 Prone Meteor, Airfix + Brigade Models Conversion, 1/48th scale.

The excellent Meteor F.8 kit from Airfix was the donor for the Brigade Models "Prone Pilot" conversion. With extra care in cutting, the provided parts fit very well with just a smidgen of filler required. The vacuum canopy for the prone pilot needs some careful trimming work to fit well and I used canopy glue to attach it. The nosewheel bay needs some additions in order to attach the Airfix undercarriage.

As for the Meteor kit, I added etch parts and additional wiring to the provided engines, one of which is displayed on a stand provided in the kit. To avoid the empty space in the aircraft's starboard engine bay, I scanned the engine's frontal view and inserted the image in situ. The model was primed with Halfords grey plastic primer and I used their Nissan Silver for the aluminium finish.

Additional computer rendered decals were such added - such as rivets and panel lines. The whole models was finished with brush applied Johnson's Klear to seal everything in.
F.8 Prone Meteor
F-107A
North American F-107A "Ultra Sabre", Trumpeter, 1/72nd scale.

This aircraft follows a line of Sabres from the North American works. The US Government were looking for a supersonic fighter-bomber to bring the USAF up-to-date with the latest technology. A design competition was initiated in the mid 1950s and the F-107A was put to the test. It had a recessed underbelly bomb bay capable of carrying an atomic bomb and also had four hard points under the wings for bombs or rockets. However, it was unsuccessful in the trial and lost out to the Republic F-105.

The Trumpeter kit is the only injection moulded kit so far produced (2016). A fairly simple kit, but with tricky decal placement. The F-86 and F-100 series of Sabres were great successes, but the follow-on from the F-107A, the XB-70 Valkyrie, was a step too far and fate took a hand in its downfall when a chase plane collided with it during flight trials.
